One-day tours generally visit the Train Graveyard, Colchani, salt flats and Incahausi Island. If taking a multi-day tour of the salt flats, it’s likely you’ll spend the night at one of the area’s unique salt hotels. However, despite a small size, Uyuni has comfortable hotels, restaurants, and travel firms which arrange multi-day tours through the salt desert.

However, if you are travelling from La Paz (which is at a similar altitude) or Cusco (just 250 m lower) then you will likely be fine as you should have acclimatised. For private tours expect to pay significantly more. These are shared tours with usually five or six people per jeep.

When to Visit Salar de Uyuni ❄️

The itinerary is similar to the standard 3-day tour, just in reverse, but this route is usually more expensive. Tupiza is another starting point for alternative Salar de Uyuni tours. A 2-day tour from Uyuni covers everything included in the 1-day tour. A 1-day tour from Uyuni is the cheapest option to explore Salar de Uyuni. Most tours to Salar de Uyuni start from the small town of Uyuni.
Collectively, these features make the Salar de Uyuni approximately five times more effective for satellite calibration than the surface of the open ocean. Hot Springs

Some people decide to skip Isla Incahuasi and just walk around it to save 30 Bs, but I think it’s money well spent. There’s a short walk to the top of the island, and the entry fee is 30 Bs (not included in the tour price). Except for two cacti-filled islands, Salar de Uyuni is completely flat, creating an endless horizon perfect for fun perspective shots. Salar de Uyuni is a paradise for photographers. This is the area where salt is dug up, piled into large pyramid-shaped mounds, and left to dry in the sun.

Best time to visit Salar de Uyuni

When it dried, it left behind two modern lakes, Poopó and Uru Uru, and two major salt deserts, Salar de Coipasa and the larger Salar de Uyuni. Uyuni originates from the Aymara language and means a pen (enclosure); Uyuni is also the name of a town that serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the Salar. There is some variation in which hot springs are included in Uyuni tours, depending on the agency. On our first tour, it wasn’t part of the itinerary, but our driver still offered to take us to watch the sunset before heading to the salt hotel. And the views of the salt flats from up there are absolutely incredible.

When these ancient bodies of water evaporated due to time they left behind a thick crust of salt and other minerals and this is what we now call Salar de Uyuni. If travelling to Uyuni by bus you will arrive early in the morning (around  6 or 7 am) and most tours begin at around 10 am, giving you time to scout around for a tour you like. During this time the salt is covered by a layer of water that provides a dramatic mirror effect and creates unique conditions for fabulous photos. At this time of year you will enjoy the quintessential views of the salt flats, with vast expanses of white landscape extending to the horizon.
Most locals make their living from salt production. Drinks were provided with meals, usually water and Coke, and dinners often came with red wine. When we did a tour in 2025, we paid extra for private rooms. When I did a tour eight years ago, the accommodation was basic. The tour takes you through elevations ranging from about 3,600 m to 4,800 m.

Sunblock, lip balm with SPF, and sunglasses – the sun is very harsh at high altitudes. You are provided blankets in hotels and refuges, but a down sleeping bag will make your sleep more comfortable. If you have enough time, I highly recommend taking a 3-day tour. You’ll follow the same itinerary as the first day of the 2-day and 3-day tours. Tour options from Uyuni include 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day tours that end either in Uyuni or in San Pedro de Atacama (Chile). It is located a short drive from the edge of the Uyuni salt flats. From Colchani, you walk on the salt flats to the Dakar Monument and Flag Monument.
Polques Hot Springs are the most common hot springs stop on 3-day Uyuni tours. Standard tours allow time for taking perspective photos. Laguna Verde (Green Lake) turns green when strong winds lift the sediments of arsenic, copper, lead, and other minerals from the bottom of the lake. To add to the experience, we could see flamingos at Laguna Challviri. On our 2025 tour, we practically had the place to ourselves and enjoyed it more, as there was only one other group besides us. Challviri Hot Springs are tucked away near Laguna Challviri and are much quieter and usually less visited. The water is about 29 degrees Celsius and contains minerals that relieve the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism.
On the 2nd and 3rd days of a standard 3-day tour, you will be taken to beautiful lagoons, and you will see flamingos and vicuñas. Due to the proximity to these international borders, many travelers either start or end their time in Bolivia at Salar de Uyuni.
